Understanding Type 2 Diabetes: Beyond the Numbers
Type 2 diabetes is not simply about high blood sugar — it is a metabolic condition in which the body gradually loses its ability to respond to insulin. Over time, the pancreas struggles to keep up, and glucose accumulates in the bloodstream. HbA1c gives us a three-month window into average blood glucose. But it is only one piece of the puzzle. Time-in-range, post-meal spikes, and fasting values together paint a fuller clinical picture. Structured lifestyle change — 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, portion-controlled meals, and consistent sleep — often outperforms medication adjustments in the first year after diagnosis. Pharmacotherapy is layered on top when targets are not met. The takeaway for patients and students alike: individualise. There is no universal HbA1c goal, no single best drug. Care must be shaped around age, comorbidities, and patient priorities.
